In the last few years, Jessie J has established herself as one of the most talented young singers in the pop music game; with songs that are both catchy and surprisingly well crafted. However, one of her four tattoos (we’ll discuss the other ones a little later, they’re nothing to write home about) doesn’t possess the same production value as her hits “Domino” and “Bang Bang”; instead, it contains a pretty big spelling mistake. The ink in question is the rather large piece that she has on her right hip; it’s meant to be some stars and the phrase “Don’t lose yourself in the glare of star”, but there’s an extra “O” in “Lose”, making it “loose”. This is a worse spelling error than a missing letter or even a jumble, because due to something the internet has dubbed “typoglycemia” our brains are pretty good at processing minor misspellings as the intended words, but an entirely different word is written on her body, so most people would just read her ink as-is. Jessie told interview Graham Norton that she plans on having the mistake covered up in the future, but that for now she wears high waisted pants more often than not in order to conceal the mistaken body art. The writer of “Party In The USA” has some other ink too, and it’s mistake free, so that’s good. Let’s take a look at the rest of her body work…Behind her left ear she has two music notes forming a heart; she said that she had it done because she wanted a tattoo that showed she loved music. It’s not original and it’s not big, but it’s perfectly fine. She also has the words “Stand Up” with a little heart under them on her right wrist; it’s simply the name of one of her songs and probably an ideal that she believes in. She seems like the type of girl who doesn’t back down from much; judging by her strong career, I’m probably right about her. This last one is a little stick figure meditating and throwing up a peace sign. It’s meant to help her relax and is most likely placed so that she can see it when she sits cross-legged. It’s a little too simple for my tastes, but it’s a nice idea and you can’t hate on it when a tattoo has an actual purpose in the owner’s life. So despite having a major mistake on one her pieces, Jessie J’s collection of tattoos is small but nice, and they all have meaning. You can never hate on someone when they’re ink means something to them, so even though she doesn’t have the best body art I’ve ever seen, I dig it all. Good job Jessie, and good luck with the cover-up.
Next time you fall in love, you’re a few months into the relationship, and you have too much to drink one night; you’re bound to start thinking that getting his/her name tattooed on your arm or getting matching tattoos is a great idea. Your friends will tell you that this is a bad idea (it is), but thanks to the former member of Guns N’ Roses you can say “Hey, Slash did it before his divorce was even final, and if the guy who played November Rain does something, it’s got to be a great idea!”. That’s right folks, less than two months after filing for divorce for the second time from his wife of thirteen years, Slash has moved in with a former and now new girlfriend named Meegan Hodges, and the two have matching ink. Going to big time artist Todd Aarik Reich to get the work done, the legendary guitar player and Grammy Awarding winning member of both Guns N’ Roses and Velvet Revolver and his new-old girlfriend got matching coordinate tattoos before the ink was even dry on his divorce papers. The two met back in the day when Axl Rose used to date Hodges roommate, and dated for a bit before forging a friendship that has apparently lasted for about twenty years. This makes this tattoo choice that much more interesting, as he’s getting matching pieces with someone he just recently shacked up with, but he clearly has a long history with her; this makes the whole thing a lot easier to give a pass too. It’s also easier to swallow this decision because this isn’t Slash’s first time in the tattoo chair. In the past, the big time music celebrity has gotten a right triceps piece (a caricature of himself with his name under it), a left triceps piece (a skull with a top hat and some roses), a forearm piece (a female silhouette), and a right shoulder piece (some lips). That’s not a ton of ink, but it’s more than most people, and enough to show that he probably knows what he’s doing when it comes to body art. So with all of that said, we’re going to have to trust Slash on this one and assume that this new relationship is for life, because that tattoo sure as heck is!
Well it looks like Selena Gomez is all grown up… or at least her body of body art would point to that being the case. The “Come And Get It” (everyone in the office agreed that if we had a daughter who sung that song, we’d be really upset) singer recently added to her tattoo collection when she visited famed artist Bang Bang McCurdy’s shop in New York City and had some work done on her back. The new piece is in Arabic and says something to the effect of “Love Yourself First”, which most likely has something to do with her still getting over her storied relationship with pop prince and all around terrible person Justin Bieber. The two were so close, that at one point they were rumored to be getting matching ink, but just like their relationship, the idea went away. The new tat is her fourth, but all together she probably only has a couple of hours of work on her, if not less. Regardless, let’s take a look at her other ink…
Her first tattoo was the tiny little guy that you see above on her wrist. It’s a music note and…well…that’s really all there is to it. It’s a tiny music note and it looks like a tiny music note. It couldn’t have cost her more that a hundred bucks and probably took less than half an hour to do.
The “Behaving Badly” star followed that note up with a bigger piece (also done by Bang Bang) on the back of her neck. She got the Roman Numerals “LXXVI”, which translates into “76”. That’s the year her mother was born and Gomez is rightfully close to her supportive mama.
Her third tat was done in 2013 and is a bible verse going down her hip. It’s Philippians 4:13 reference, a bible quote which states “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”. The actual piece says “God who strengthens me”. It’s a simple piece, but it sits well on her body and should stay nicely if she takes care of herself. Actually, all of her ink is “nice”, just none of it is impressive. She just “has some tattoos”, she’s not “tattooed”. If that makes sense to you, then you’re tattooed. If it doesn’t…well then you might be Selena Gomez, and we wish you the best of luck in your future inkings!
If Adele is one thing, it’s talented. If Adele is two things; one is definitely talented, and the other isn’t “good at picking creative tattoos”. In a recent appearance at the 2013 Grammy Awards, the “Set Fire To The Rain” singer and former dominator of the biggest butt kissing contest in the music industry debuted her new ink and didn’t really impress anyone. To be clear, the sentiment behind it was nothing but sweet, it’s just the execution that we find to be lacking.
The new ink is a simple “A” written in script on the side of her head, right behind her right ear. It’s very small and doesn’t draw a lot of attention, which is fine, but it’s also…just…so…lazy. We’re almost one hundred percent sure that the piece was done in honor of her son Angelo, which we think is great. You’re never going to go wrong when you get ink in honor of one of your kids; significant others can go leave and friends can bail, but your children should be forever, so it’s a pretty safe bet to pay tribute to them on your body. She’s shown public love for him before in the form of flashy jewelry and you know, by loving him; so it should come as no surprise that she’s decided to put his initial on her body.
What does come as a surprise is that someone with the talent and creativity of Adele didn’t get something more artistic than a simple letter. We would’ve expected an angel, or maybe some other type of symbol that represents her son’s name and/or role in her life. However, it kind of makes sense for someone as elegant as her to get something really simple, so we’re not totally shocked by her choice.
We don’t really see her having much more done in the way of tattoos in her future, but maybe she’ll wind up with something on her wrist like a small tribute to her husband or something. The wrist is a popular spot for classy ladies to get ink done. Also, if she ends up with another kid, she might have to get some more ink done to keep things even in her household. Time will tell whether Adele decides to have more art put on her body, but we hope that if she does she chooses something more complex than a simple letter.
Hey folks, it’s time to take a little look at the ink that’s currently gracing some of your favorite stars, as we present (* Fancy bellowing announcer voice *) Wednesday’s Tattoo Round Up! We know, it’d be better if it were Tuesday for alliteration purposes…but it’s not…so yeah, just keep reading.
First up, we have Justin Bieber’s number one lady, Selena Gomez. The Wizards of Waverly Place star and “Love You Like A Love Song” singer previously only had one tiny tattoo, but she decided to add to her body art collection during a recent trip to New York. Gomez’s first ink was a little heart on her wrist; she got it at the Under The Gun shop in Los Angeles, and it’s so small that it’s hard to find a picture of it where it doesn’t look like a speck of dirt. Her new ink is a bit larger, but still isn’t huge; it also appears to have a much deeper meaning. Gomez got the Roman numerals “LXXVI” on the back of her neck, which translate into “73”. The new ink was done by famed New York City tattoo-man Bang Bang at his shop, and according to the artist, it has a very special meaning to Gomez. In a recent interview about the Spring Breakers star’s visit to his show, he stated “The tattoo was a tribute to a family member who she said means a lot to her.”. We don’t know the exact meaning of the ink; is it someone’s age when they passed away? Someone’s birth year? We have no idea, but we always respect a tribute piece; we also respect that her new tat can actually be seen without the aid of a microscope and/or a jeweler’s loop. He boyfriend Justin Bieber, who recently threw up on stage during a performance (that’s not really relevant, we just wanted to remind you of his embarrassment), has a bunch of ink of his own, so we have to wonder if he’s rubbing off on her.
Selena Gomez wasn’t the only star to go under the gun recently, as everyone’s favorite serial killer, Michael C. Hall also hit up the local tattoo parlor just days ago. Cameras caught the Dexter star sitting on a table at True Tattoo in Los Angeles having his foot worked on by one of their artists. When asked what he was having done, Hall said “I’m just doctoring up my alien markings.”, which is celebrity for “None of your business”. From the looks of it, it’s just an artistic design, although it does look like something cavemen would have drawn on cave walls after an extraterrestrial encounter.
So a young pop starlet and a guy who plays a murdering hero both got inked within days of each other; is this part of some kind of conspiracy? Are the stars aligning via body art to take over the world?! No. People just get inked sometimes, stop being crazy folks.
Well folks, the simple truth about our business is that some days there’s just nothing to write about, and others…well other days the world of celebrity gives you a shiny nugget of amazing to write about. Today is one such day, as both Rihanna and Chris Brown have gotten new tattoos within days of each other, and they’re so amazing that we almost didn’t believe that they were real. No, not “amazingly cool” or “amazingly well done”, there’s no fun in that; nope, they’re amazingly bad! The best kind of amazing! These two both already have their fair share of ink, especially Brown, but these new tats take the cake.
First up, we have Rihanna’s tattoo, which is supposedly a tribute to her grandmother. What’s the best way to pay homage to your momma’s momma? By getting the area directly under your boobs tattooed! Duh! She got some sort of Nubian or Egyptian goddess right smack dab on her breast bone. The wings spread under her breasts, which kind of makes it look like her boobs are going to fly away at any given moment, and the goddess’ head-dress extends up into her cleavage area which should lead to some weird looking cleavage. Now this isn’t a bad tattoo in the poorly done sense, it’s actually pretty nicely, albeit simplistically, designed; it even has a similar quality to the hawk that she recently got on on her foot. However, it’s a bad tattoo in the way of “why would someone who isn’t out of space everywhere else tattoo the area directly under her breasts!?”. We hate to be the ones to drop the old “How’s that going to look when you’re older?” on someone (especially considering how bad some of our ink is), but the moment she get’s pregnant or starts losing the age-old battle with gravity, that tattoo is going to look horrible. However poorly thought out Rihanna’s new ink may be, at least it’s not horrendously offensive and terrible…Chris Brown has that angle covered for the both of them.
Before we go any further, let’s just put this out there: Chris Brown is the worst. He’s a walking, talking everthing-that’s-wrong-with-music; he’s over produced, over praised, over confident, over forgiven, and we’re over him. So with that said; let’s all guess what the worst possible tattoo a guy who once beat his girlfriend (Rihanna, for those of you who take residence under the proverbial rock) to a pulp could get. Seriously, guess; pretend you didn’t look at the header picture and guess what the worst tattoo Chris Brown could ever get is. Yes folks, that’s not Photoshop, that’s a tattoo of a beaten woman on the neck of a guy who beats women. Furthermore, your eyes aren’t decieving you, the woman in the tattoo looks an awful lot like Rihanna…like a lot like Rihanna…as in “That’s clearly a tattoo of a beaten Rihanna on Chris Brown’s neck!” like Rihanna. Brown has of course denied that the tattoo is of Rihanna, instead calling it a coincidence and saying that it’s art but not a portrait. Does he really think that we’re all that stupid? More importantly, how many people actually are that stupid? If his album and concert ticket sales are any indication, a lot of people are that stupid. This new tattoo is just another reminder that Chris Brown doesn’t respect anyone or anything, and that he has horrible taste in ink. Furthermore, whoever did this piece should hang their head. Giving him this tattoo is no different than being the guy who inks hate symbols on Neo-Nazis; seriously dude, it’s not worth the money or the publicity it brings your shop.
So there you have it folks, Chris Brown and Rihanna both got new tattoos, and they really sum up the entire situation between the two of them. Rihanna got something that was well intentioned but ultimately a bad idea, and Chris Brown got a tattoo that shows his complete lack of respect for the female species and for people as a whole…and they both look pretty dumb in the end.
The title of this article pretty much sums up what we knew about Sarah Harding before we found out that the recently got a new back tattoo, but once we started to look into the former Girls Aloud group member, we quickly realized that our UK readers absolutely love her! The reality contested turned-bonafide pop-star has a had a ton of hits, and has used the proceeds from them to get a few tattoos, most recently one on her back that says “Don’t be Bitter- Glitter”. She got in the wake of an abuse scandal between her and her former boyfriend; we’re assuming that it’s meant to be inspirational. She also has a small star on the side of her neck (behind her ear), and some Tibetan script on her forearm. She also used to have a small tattoo on her shoulder blade that she recently got removed via laser-surgery. She wears all of her tattoos well, and they fit in well with her glamorous bad girl image.
DeShawn Stevenson has had a fairly uneventful career in the National Basketball Association (NBA), but the Dallas Mavericks’ guard/forward has a few things going for him; his tenacity, an NBA Championship ring, one of the best tattoos in the league, and a new fall back career as a tattoo artist. Stevenson is covered in ink, but his most prominent piece is the Abraham Lincoln surrounded by “5”s that he has in the front of his neck (the jugular/ Adam’s apple area); he got it for the obvious reason of Lincoln being a great man who freed the slaves. In addition to his awesome neck-ink, DeShawn has also turned his love of tattoos into a new hobby/possibly career, as he recently started to do a little work of his own as a tattoo artist. He did the small piece on his favorite tattoo artist at Fallen Sparrow Tattoo Co. ; we’re not sure if he really sees a future in this, but the tattoo (“92”, his jersey number) came out pretty nice for a first effort.
Chris “Birdman” Anderson of the National BasketBall Association’s (NBA) Denver Nuggets is easily one of our favorite players, for many reasons. There’s his hard-nosed style of play, his “good but not great, and therefore attainable” level of skill, his crazy on the court antics, and most of, there’s the fact that he’s covered in tattoos. His newest, and most blatant, piece of ink is the “Free Bird” piece that wraps around his neck; it’s both well done, and painful, which makes it a ‘win’ in our book. He also has his bird wings, one on each bicep; a zombie version of himself, on his arm; a skull wearing a crown on his arm; two large Chinese characters, one on each forearm; a pit bull on his chest; “Honky Tonk” on his stomach; and a guy dunking a ball on his right arm. Birdman is definitely on the NBA’s “most tattooed” list, and considering how many guys in the league have ink, that’s a pretty impressive accomplishment.
Best known for her portrayal of ‘Santana Lopez’ (does that sound like a 1970’s television show about a Mexican private detective to anyone else?) on…(*cringes*)… Glee; Naya Rivera is also a solo artist and songwriter, and she’s also heavily tattooed (well she has a lot of tattoos, they’re all pretty small though). From what we can tell, she has a peace sign on her left ankle, the word “fighter” (not in English) on her right wrist, a shooting star on her right foot, a bow on the back of her neck, and a fairly large cross on her lower back. Judging by how many she has already, and the fact that she’s only in her twenties (still erks us that she plays a teenager though), we expect Naya Rivera to get at least a little more ink before it’s all said and done.
