Well folks, it’s time to face facts; Justin Timberlake is kind of awesome. For years, many of us (males in particular) have tried to pretend that just because he started out in N’Sync and had fancy hair, the In Time star was never going to be more than a boy band-er. However, his albums Justified and FutureSex/LoveSounds were both pretty epic, and his acting talents have shined in films like The Social Network and Bad Teacher, proving that he’s now a full fledged star. Somewhere along the line, he also went and got some pretty okay tattoos, which include the cross on his shouldler, the angel with his mom’s initials on his back, the N’Sync logos on his wrist and ankle (okay, those are still pretty goofy, but we all make mistakes; right guy with barbed-wire tattoo on his forearm?), the zodiac sign on his calf, and the Chinese character for “music” on his ankle. Are they the best tattoos? No, but they’re not bad, and they’re way cooler than Nick Lachey’s.
Drew has reportedly six tattoos with the cross on her ankle and the butterfly on her stomach being the largest and most noticeable. Just to the side of the butterfly is a floral design. On her back she has a trio of angles carrying a cross with her mother’s name. None of the tats have much color, a little blue on the butterfly and a bit of greenish black on the cross. The cross has a vine wrapped around it. Also, she has a moon on the big toe of her right foot. These are some standard designs but its all about the execution, placement, color and meaning to the wearer. Butterflies and crosses can still be good choices if done in an interesting way. In this case, although there is nothing outstanding or that spectacular, hers aren’t bad. She wears them well and they add a little character to her flesh.
When you think Jersey Shore, we’re 99% sure that the first word that pops into your mind is “religious”, but aparently that wouldn’t be that far off…at least in regards to resident brawler Ronnie Magro’s tattoos. The Bronx born “star” of the popular MTV series has three large pieces of ink on his body, and they’re all related to his catholic faith, and all really well done. On his left shoulder blad/upper back, he has a wooden cross; on his stomach, he has praying hands; and for his latest tattoo, he has a quarter sleave on his right shoulder that depicts heaven and hell. So folks, while it’s safe to say that he doesn’t have the most original ink in the world, at least he has some pieces that mean something to him. He’s also the cast member that we’d least like to throw a used diaper at, so he’s got that going for him.
Hello Mrs. Milano what do we have here but a few spiritual symbols placed here and there. Let us begin with the Buddhist “Hum” she has on her neck. Thumbs up for that one, the style is clear and bold and if you are going to put something on your neck the symbol for universal wisdom, unity and power is a decent choice. She also has an “Om” on one of her wrists to compliment the “Hum”. Right on, we can dig all the Buddhist script characters if that’s what you’re into. On her right wrist however is a snake that is biting its own tail, also known as the Celtic ouroboros, symbolizing the cycle of life and death. Then on her shoulder some rosary beads and a cross. On her ankle, she has an angel and then there is another angel/faerie on her stomach. Wait a minute, I think she left out a few religions, where is the star of David and some Arabic script? Middle Eastern fans of hers are going to feel left out. And on her other ankle some flowers? How do the flowers fit in? Maybe she started with that one before she decided to go all spiritual on us.
David Beckham is one of, if not the biggest name in the biggest sport in the world. Playing as a mid-fielder, Beckham has been a star for Manchester Uniter, Real Madrid, The LA Galaxy, and the English National Team, but he’s perhaps almost as famous for his good looks as he is for his skills on the field. In the past, a man with his brand of fair haired good looks would’ve lost popularity when he started getting tattooed, but lucky for Beckham, he lives in a time where tattoos just add to one’s sex appeal. It seems that the more inked he gets, the more women love him; so he just keeps on getting tattoed. What does he have? Glad you asked: he has a big Jesus on his torso (taken from the painting The Man Of Sorrows), a crucifix on the back of his neck, a guardian angel between his shoulder blades (it overlooks the names of his three children; Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz), an angel on his right shoulder (with the text “In the face of adversity”), the Roman numeral VII on his right arm (for the number seven shirt he wore at Manchester United), a pin-up girl on his forearm, the name of his wife Victoria written in Hindi (he thought it would be “tacky” to have it in English) and a Bible verse written in Hebrew, reads אני לדודי ודודי לי הרעה בשושנים ( “I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine, that shepherds among the lilies.”); as well as many others with a dominating theme of things with wings. Most of Beckham’s work has been done by Manchester tattooist Louis Malloy.
50 Cent real name Curtis James Jackson III, was born July 6, 1975 in South Jamaica, Queens NY. He is best known as a rapper but has been moving more and more into films recently. He first appeared on the scene in 2003 with the release of ‘Get Rich or Die Tryin’ which has gone on to sell a total of 15 million copies worldwide. That smash was soon followed by ‘The Massacre’ in 2005 which went on the sell an impressive 11 million copies. 50 Cent is one of the rare artists who have made it from the streets to the highest successes of fame. He started out as a drug dealer when he was just 12 years old. He had a passion for rapping and decided to pursue the music business. In 2000 50 was shot nine times. After surviving that incident he went on to record an album titled ‘Guess Who’s Back?’ in 2002. The record caught the attention of Eminem who signed him to Interscope Records.
Recently 50 Cent was having his tattoos removed with laser treatments. 50 said he underwent the painful laser treatments to remove most of his tattoos because he was tired of the hours he spent in the makeup chair covering them up for his movie roles.
This large back piece was done by the tattoo artist Cartoon and says South Side. That’s one big 50, with another 50 on his arm just in case you missed the big one and forgot who this was. He’s got some angels and demons too.
Aaron Carter is a teen pop singer, brother of Backstreet Boy Nick Carter. At 23, he has already been through a month long Betty Ford Center treatment program. He has been busy adding tattoos to his collection. At last count there were 8 and each of them is claimed to be originally designed. For the most part none of them features any color of note. There is a little blue used on the sun blades on his back but the rest are only black ink on white skin. We can see the retro purity of that decision but at the same time a little color can add a lot to the art.
The most visible tat is the angel which covers the top of his left forearm. The angel has slightly Manga looking cartoonish features, a fifties hairstyle and some rather conservative clothing. Her feet disappear into clouds and her wings look like natural bird wings.
We’re not sure how he can claim the nautical star on the inside of his right forearem is an original design, that is pretty commonly seen, supposedly because it has a number seven encircled in the middle of it.
Now on his back there is something interesting. What is it? A skull or a sun? Blue blades of ice or flames? It is a bit sloppy, shapeless and with wrinkles on the forehead. This space is a nice large spot in the middle of his back and there could be some improvements to this sub par tattoo. We would definitely like to see a re-work on that one. How old was he when he got that anyway it looks like he might have been 12 when it first appeared, maybe a twelve year old drew it.
If anyone deserves a tattoo review here is the man. California native, aged 35, he is well on his way to filling up the body canvas. With his wealth of designs, he blesses the covers of tattoo magazines. This is none other than the punk pop drummer Travis Barker, drummer for Blink 182. He has also recently released a solo album Give the Drummer Some where he mixes it up with some other players in his music genre. It has some heavy riffs, hip hop raps, and don’t forget the drums and beats.
Well, this drummer has got some ink. Great color combinations in swirling intricate designs pretty evenly spaced out across his torso and arms up to the side of his head. No doubt he has been taking advantage of good quantity and quality of tattoo artists in the LA area. Facing forward most prominent is the stereo boob box on his stomach, Marilyn Monroe in the center of his neck and the checkered flags on either side of Marilyn. Just below “can I say” is the Cadillac emblem. Cadillac is also written on his side in letters as big as possible. “Hope” on his lower back is written as large possible too. On his right shoulder he has a woman’s face with her blue hair swirling into other organic designs. The dominant themes are scripts, stars and the colors.
That says something, I don’t know what, that Norman has his own named inked on himself front and center. Nice little devil he has there, it looks like it was taken from Napoleon Dynamite’s sketch book.
We’re not sure what this next one is (star?) but apparently it appears on his body somewhere.
Norman has a little tat on his neck for the second Boondock film. That’s a good idea. If your an actor wearing different clothes and taking on a role a few tattoos can really make you feel like a different person or character.
Angels and/or demons on back. Some say they are the same thing. Maybe demons were once angles or they can switch back and forth depending on the situation. And so maybe that is what the artist is telling us, and what Norman wanted – here are some angles that don’t appear too angelic, at any moment they can become demons…
