We don’t really like Russell Brand around these parts; he’s a bit annoying and his hair reminds us of our weird Aunt Yaya, and she was really mean to us when we were kids (yes…we’re all related, don’t question it). However, we respect how meaningful his new tattoos are. The devote Yoga practitioner recently stepped out with his instructor to do some charity work (another respectable thing…we still don’t like him, but we’d probably have to shake his hand if we met him), and was rocking a sleaveless t-shirt that showed off his new ink. The tattoos, which he’s believed to have gotten a couple of months ago, are of the seven chakras of Hindu and Buddhist yoga and tantra traditions. The tattoos are in Sankrit and chakras are the seven energy centers that it’s believed the body houses. Brand has become very spiritual in recent years, and regularly practices yoga; despite his close relationship with his instructor, he doesn’t take private lessons and prefers instead to practice in a public class setting.
Kym Marsh, known to British television audiences as Michelle Conner of Coronation Street and to American audiences as…a British person, has a couple of well placed tattoos. The actress and singer has Japanese Kanji symbols of unknown meaning running down her spine on her lower back. The star who sang Cry also has the name of her husband in Japanese and the name of her kids in Arabic tattooed on her left shoulder. They’re very subtle pieces, and despite they’re prime placement, they don’t draw too much attention away from her stunning good looks. She manages the rare feat of having highly visible tattoos, while still looking very classically beautiful; you know, like Bon Jovi…what? He’s a lovely man.
Since hitting it big with her debut single “Umbrella”, hip-hop princess Rihanna (born Robyn Rihanna Fenty in 1988) has been all over the world, and apparently has visited a lot of tattoo shops. By her own admission, she likes to hang out in them, and it shows, as she’s accumulated at least fourteen tattoos all over her young self. So far, she has a music note on her ankle, Pisces sign behind her right ear, a Sanskrit prayer going down her hip, a star in her left ear, the word ‘love’ on her left middle finger, ‘Freedom is God’ in Arabic on her ribs, a trail of stars going down her back, a cute skull with a pink hair bow, the phrase ‘shhh…’ on her right index finger, the date ’4.11.1986′ on top of her left shoulder (her best friend and assistant’s birthday), a henna-style dragon claw,a handgun on her ribs (she got it during the midst of all the abuse stories and rumors about her relationship drama with former boyfriend Chris Brown), “Never a failure, always a lesson” motto in mirror writing, and most recently “rebelle fleur” which means “rebellious flower” in french. She has also been known to put on some temporary ink for performances so if you see something new on her you can never be sure if its temp or perm.
Alex Pettyfer is from England and started out modeling. In 2005 he began acting and just recently has really started rolling, getting prime time Hollywood gigs – the main actor in I am Number Four and in Beastly alongside some other Hollywood big timers. Interestingly for us, the character in Beastly has face and neck tattoos (and Arabic script tattooed for eyebrows (who knows what that says?)). But this is supposed to be designed to minimize the impact of the characters scars. We didn’t see the movie so we don’t know what the metallic looking body modification on his face is supposed to be.
The cross tattoo is ok but it looks a little bare. We suggest a swirling circular serpent Celtic mandala to surround the cross with dark green and blue shades. Also, the text on his shoulder could use some kind of framing, a band or design underneath it to give it more of a substantial look.
He also has something on his wrist and is rumored to have Arabic script on the inside of his arm but we haven’t found evidence of that one.
His look with a little more than tattoos in the movie Beastly:
