Hello Mrs. Milano what do we have here but a few spiritual symbols placed here and there. Let us begin with the Buddhist “Hum” she has on her neck. Thumbs up for that one, the style is clear and bold and if you are going to put something on your neck the symbol for universal wisdom, unity and power is a decent choice. She also has an “Om” on one of her wrists to compliment the “Hum”. Right on, we can dig all the Buddhist script characters if that’s what you’re into. On her right wrist however is a snake that is biting its own tail, also known as the Celtic ouroboros, symbolizing the cycle of life and death. Then on her shoulder some rosary beads and a cross. On her ankle, she has an angel and then there is another angel/faerie on her stomach. Wait a minute, I think she left out a few religions, where is the star of David and some Arabic script? Middle Eastern fans of hers are going to feel left out. And on her other ankle some flowers? How do the flowers fit in? Maybe she started with that one before she decided to go all spiritual on us.
One of the world’s most beautiful and talented movie stars (arguably), Angelina Jolie was born June 4th, 1975. She has starred in hits such as Tomb Raider and the comedy Mr. & Mrs. Smith, which also stared her famous husband Brad Pitt. Angelina has numerous tattoos. Many are rather odd but we like that she hasn’t been afraid to remove and redo when necessary, always improving the canvas even if you can see the remnants of the old ink underneath. She has one of her brother’s initial, the letter “h” located on her left wrist. The Roman numeral 13 on her left forearm, an Arabic gesture meaning “strength of will”, a Latin cross on her left abdomen, and symbols from the Buddhist prayer which covers up an old Japanese tattoo, which means death. Among her other tattoos are “know your rights”, an Asian tiger (with a dragon underneath), the letter “M”, map coordinations with personal meaning, the words “Quod me nutrit me destriuit”, two sharp edged black tribal symbols, “tears” and “toil”, and small swirly Roman numerals. She had the Billy Bob dragon tattoo on her arm laser removed when she divorced her ex-husband Billy Bob Thornton.
Here’s a look at her before she started seriously:
California native Brandon Boyd is a musician and visual artist (mostly a painter). He is best known of course as the singer for the band Incubus. As an artist we expect some decent tattoos from him and truth be told he has designed some decent ones. In red, in ancient Buddhist script, he has written the sacred chant “Om Mani Padme Hum” that is translated in various ways. The choice of red here works well in contrast with the rest of the tats on the same arm and in contrast with his other arm. Continuing with the Indian theme, he has a flowery mandala on the other side of the Om, with some more script characters inside the flower petals. Towards his wrist, he has some thick circles-within-circles design. And there is another one of a stylized fish in a circle.
On the other arm is an elaborate peacock and a portrait of what looks like a monk contemplating something. On his back he has a big flying pyramid with the “all seeing eye” in it, kind of like the dollar bill except this one has big wings. We leave it for you to speculate about what this symbolizes. Below that is another winged, flying creature. The question we have is why is the flying creature so close to the flying pyramid, smashed up right under the wings of the pyramid? There seems to be more space available. One possibility is that he plans to put more tattoos below and to the right of the pyramid making a rounded symmetrical shape out of the 3-4 tattoos. That might work.
